LeBron James wears Kaepernick gear to Lakers’ preseason game

Getty Images

LeBron James is showing his support for Colin Kaepernick, and for the company they both endorse.

James showed up to the Lakers’ preseason game on Thursday night wearing a Kaepernick-branded Nike shirt. Nike launched an ad campaign and apparel line with Kaepernick at the start of the NFL season, and several other high-profile athletes with Nike deals have supported the line.

On Instagram, James posted a picture of himself in the Kaepernick shirt, tagging Kaepernick and using the hashtag, #MoreThanAnAthlete.

In addition to being the best player in the NBA, James has recently taken on more of an activist role, speaking out for political causes and opening a school in his hometown of Akron that aims to give low-income children the same opportunities that children in the wealthiest districts are afforded. So while a cynic might say James’ support for Kaepernick is about Nike synergy, James seems sincere in backing Kaepernick for more than just business reasons.

  1. The greatest basketball player to ever live. Mr. LeBron James.

Top 5 Basketball players Ever: LeBron James, Michael Jordan, Wilt Chamberlain, Ervin Johnson and Allen Iverson. In that order.

  2. I’ve never like Kap as a QB even when he was playing in Nevada. But I’m glad he’s getting support for his cause. Definitely a controversial way to get the whole movement going, but I agree with the movement (the real reason). So thumbs up on this.

  3. I am so sick of Kaepernick crap. He opted out of 1 deal, refused another, and now he values himself more than his talent. In order for him to make anybimpact he would need to be with a team from training camp, his skill set would cause too many changes offensively. Why in the world would any team want the circus that comes with him and he is only the back-up? He is done, still trying to figure out how he is such a champion of the oppressed when he wore a Castro shirt???

  4. He is a role model for what he does in the community, the vast amount of scholarships he’s created for kids as a part of his I Promise Program (you should google it), his willingness to speak out against injustices, the way he handles his business ventures and the fact that all of his movies/tv shows have legitimate purposes, his ownership of his brand as an athlete and willingness to create platforms for athletes. I don’t know, but I can continue to list why he’s a role model, but he does much more than bounce a ball.

  5. He created so many jobs in the cities of Cleveland/Akron and has employed so many people through his business ventures. LeBron is for the great of the people. An amazing basketball player and even better person.

  6. Anyone remember when Kaepernick was outplayed by Blaine Gabbert for 2 seasons? I’m a niners fan….i remember. Apparently Nike forgot

His real reason? The real reason why he pouted and sat was because was pulled for Blaine Gabbert. Then he started saying it was because of racial inequality. So you support crybabies and temper tantrums.

  13. LeBron James is a cry baby moron.

In the NBA, he blames everyone else when he screws up. Gets pissed and hurts hand on a whiteboard.

He isn’t even a top 5 Laker. (No particular order)

    Chamberlain
    Robertson
    West
    Magic
    Shaq
    Kobe

  16. Here I was thinking LeBron was too smart to be suckered into supporting a false flag. BTW a few of us “old white guys” still think Russell, Jordan, Magic and Kareem would have been worthy opponents for Mr James so please leave out your racist bit. it’s sad that so many still think race first. Millennials are funny. Jordan would eat James’ lunch every day all day and laugh at him just like he did to everyone else. If you’ve never seen Jordan play in his prime you don’t know what you’re talking about. Jordan was a cold blooded killer.

  21. Lebron is the most physically dominant, gifted and talented NBA player ever. However, there still is nothing like watching Jordan in his prime. The way he took over games and hit big shots.

  22. I’m triggered by clothing that someone else is wearing. Now I’m going to lash out and call others snowflakes and buttercups even though I’m the one that chose to look and comment. I’ll blame others for my actions/emotional melt down.

He’s my role model. He had a rough past growing up in a single parent home like me.. I never met my father. His mom struggled like mine but proved to raise a success young man.. putting him around people to help him develop. Lebron is also a role model because of his beautiful family. He is married to his high school sweetheart. Lebron has never been arrested.. he is a great guy. Anyone that says otherwise is either ignorant of who he is or you just have a deeper hatred for no reason

  24. Lebron James is not more physically dominant than Karl Malone was. He isn’t the scorer or defender that Michael Jordon was. He doesn’t control the ball the way John Stockton did. So enough of the Lebron hype. He is good no doubt about it. But he doesn’t compare to the best of all-time.

The difference between OWGs and guys like Kaep & LeBron, the OWGs do good things for others all the time but don’t feel the need to create t-shirts, hats and advertising campaigns every time they do something for others. OWG’s have created endowments that have put literally millions through schools and will continue to do so ad infintum. This “look at me”” Johnny come lately should take a lesson from humble men who genuinely contribute to the betterment of all.

Perhaps it’s you who needs to walk a mile in someone’s shoes before judging.

  26. Michael Jordan wasn absolute as close to perfect basketball player on the court. No doubt. He quit on his team under suspicious reasons surrounding his father’s death and he never stood up for anyone but Michael Jordan. That’s why he’s not #1. He did not use his platform for anything but greed and self adulation. #2 on my list and that’s final. Take your millenial tag and shove it. I will. With my education I earned, not given and still paying loans, I would be given a higher paying job even though my qualifications are not as good just because of what I look like. Then if I would fail because I lack the qualifications….I’d blame it on the “broken system” and everything would be ok or I would lead a protest.

  30. I still am trying to figure out what has Kaepernick done that make people hate him so much?? He did nothing illegal or outside of his rights as an American. But we have leaders in this country that have done some very questionable things that was illegal (still waiting on those taxes to be shown) but Americans allow them to stir the pot.

Um, youre forgetting details here, so I’ll help you out. Kaepernick was opting out of his contract BEFORE Lynch and Shannahan took over. He was opting out when Chip Kelly and Trent Baalke were there. So Kaep was gone before they even got there and that was Kaeps own doing.

I seem to remember Kaep coming off injury the season Gabbert was starting and not being ready to play…but below are their stats during the time Gabbert was on the team. So people have more than your suspect memory to go off of. Also in 2016 when Kaep got better physically the team benched Gabbert.

Blaine Gabbert’s stats with San Fran (2014-2016)
    2994 passing yards 60.6% comp 16td-13int, 80.2 rating, 363 yards rushing, 3 tds

    Colin Kaepernick
    (2014-2016)
    7225 passing yards, 59.7% comp, 41td-19int, 85.2
1363 yards rushing, 4 rushing tds

Because everytime he opens his mouth or shows his true colors, like whining for getting benched for Gabbert/Pig socks/Castro shirt he shows he is a clueless jack. His handlers have shut him up because, while he has turned into a good figurehead for their agenda, he personally is clueless.

I almost fell out of my chair laughing at your list!! Seriously, it is that hilarious! Allen Iverson????? Give me a break!!!

I’ll give you 10 players right now off the top of my head who are way better than Iverson was on his best day:
Bill Russell, Earl The Pearl Monroe, Walt Frazier, Oscar Robinson, Bill Walton, Hakeem Alajuwan, Jerry West, Julius Erving, Moses Malone, Elvin Hayes.
I did that without even thinking about it and if I wanted, I could name 50 players better than Iverson.
And the most dominant player who ever lived was Wilt Chamberlain, period. No one in the history of the NBA dominated the game the way he did. Kareem Abdul Jabaar was the best player in the game when he entered the league, and yet Chamberlain outplayed him even though he was an aging superstar.
I’m not slighting LeBron James, but the greatest player in NBA history is not him. I’d take Bill Russell, Michael Jordan, and Will Chamberlain over him. LeBron is lucky he is playing in an era with very few big men (centers) who are any good. If he tried coming down the lane like he does now against guys like Elvin Hayes, Wilt Chamberlain, Willis Reed, and Bill Walton, they’d have stuffed him all the way back to the third row seats.
The players today have a huge advantage in scoring because of the three point shot. It turned the game into street ball. I laugh when I see some of these teams today try to play defense.

  46. LeBron is obsessed with looking better than MJ, but he knows the door is closed on the GOAT stuff. He’s 3-6 in the NBA Finals. Jordan is 6-0 and beats LeBron in every advanced metric, despite LeBron not playing through his decline yet. The argument is over and has been over for awhile now. The only thing he can beat Jordan at is “who was the best SJW”.

  47. What Kap or Lebron does should have no bearing on anyone’s life at all. If it does, you’re doing it wrong. Worry about yourself and your family, work as hard as you can and then work harder. Don’t take days off, don’t take vacations, don’t take sick days. Kap and Lebron do not give a damn about any one of us, they go about their business. You should go about yours.

  48. OMG, no longer a LeBron fan.
He made his views public, based on those views, I have lost all respect for LeBron.
He probably did this to get street cred with the dregs of California liberal society.

  49. Kaepernick is yesterday’s news. He will never play in the NFL again, and his assertion that he has sacrificed everything for his cause only shows how completely tone deaf he is. If Kaepernick wants to see an example of those who have sacrificed everything, he needs to tour Arlington National Cemetery, or any military burial grounds. If James wants to hitch his wagon to someone like that, that’s his problem.
