Wet weather continues across NSW as October average topped
Parts of Sydney have already exceeded the rainfall average for October, just five days in, after heavy rain lashed the state overnight.
The rain is set to continue over the weekend, but the Bureau of Meteorology says it has most likely peaked.
Parts of Sydney received more than 70 millimetres during Thursday evening and Friday morning, meteorologist Zhi-Wang Chua said.
"[It was] pretty significant rainfall. Over the evening and overnight we did see roughly 50-70 millimetres around Sydney," he said.
"Sydney Olympic Park got 71 millimetres [and it’s] still picking up."
Sydney has had 43 millimetres of rain since 9am on Thursday. Bankstown, Canterbury and Horsley Park all received more than 50 millimetres in that time.
Mr Chua said rainfall was heaviest around the central parts of the NSW coast, with parts of Wollongong copping almost 80 millimetres overnight.
Brogers Creek, south of Wollongong, recorded 79 millimetres, while Rixons Pass to the north of the city got 78 millimetres.
Mr Chua said the rain was not record-breaking, but the totals were well above the October average for many parts of the state.
"For Sydney Olympic Park the average rainfall in October is 64.9 millimetres, so [it's] already exceeded the monthly average in 24 hours," he said.
Regional parts of the state have exceeded their yearly total rainfall as drought continues to grip NSW.
A storm on Wednesday night delivered 34 millimetres to Broken Hill in far western NSW, which had received only 24.6 millimetres between January and September.
Another far-western NSW town, Menindee, had received only 37 millimetres of rain this year. However, in the 24 hours to 9am on Thursday, it copped 50 millimetres.
The wet weather has probably peaked, Mr Chua said, but 20-45 millimetres is forecast in the Sydney area for the rest of Friday.
"The peak has probably gone past but we’re still expecting some significant rainfall today," he said.
"On Saturday, it will start to ease up even more, and then on Sunday the bulk of the rainfall should have passed but we could still see some showers lingering."
On Saturday, up to 20 millimetres is forecast and, by Sunday, rainfall is expected to drop to about 5 millimetres in the city.
