Brisbane's Willy Wonka wannabes go on sugar rush in pop-up funhouse

A pop-up museum dedicated to sweets and treats has adults reliving their childhood Willy Wonka-style in Brisbane.

Sugar Republic has opened at the Valley Metro in Fortitude Valley after selling close to 25,000 tickets in eight weeks in Melbourne.

Adults and children can splash about in a giant pink bubblegum ball pit with about 100,000 balls, dance inside a giant gumball machine and jump out of a birthday cake.

Other sensory rooms include a sugar-themed neon installation, a button that releases confetti and artwork by freelance illustrator Dawn Tan.

Director Allison Jones said the museum would satisfy Instagram users and art lovers.

"There’s nothing like it and it’s a chance for everyone to have fun, treat themselves to a few sweets and sweet-filled memories," she said.

Ms Jones said social media was changing the way people viewed artwork.

"There has been a huge proliferation of immersive and interactive museums and exhibitions around the world and here in Australia," she said.

"Visitors to GOMA will know this and more and more people are enjoying the idea of being part of an exhibition rather than just looking at it."

Tickets must be bought in advance and the exhibition will end on October 21.
