Former teacher fronts court on historic sex charges after extradition

A former teacher has fronted a Melbourne court over a string of historical child sex offences, including nine counts of rape, after police extradited him from Brisbane.

Sano Taskforce detectives, with the assistance of Queensland Police Service, arrested and charged Kevin Wilmore Myers, 72, in the Brisbane suburb of Spring Hill on Tuesday morning.

Mr Myers faces 32 charges - nine counts of rape, one of attempted rape and 22 of indecent assault - over allegations he sexually assaulted eight teenage boys between 1980 and 1982 in western Victoria.

Dressed in a red and grey jumper over a collared shirt and wearing thick glasses, Mr Myers appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday.

He did not say anything other than smile at magistrate Franz Holzer as he was remanded in custody to return to court in January. He did not apply for bail.

Mr Myers has numerous health problems including diabetes, a heart condition and hypertension, defence counsel Sharon Healey said. He also has a fractured vertebrae and had a metal rod in his left thigh bone.

It is understood Mr Myers was working and living in western Victoria between 1980 and 1982 when the alleged offending took place. Police said on Thursday he was now living in Rockhampton.

The Sano Taskforce specialises in investigating historical sexual assault and child abuse matters.

In a statement, Victoria Police said it was committed to investigating and bringing to justice those people who preyed on children, no matter how many years had passed, and encouraged all victims of sexual assault to make a report.
