The Mercedes-AMG One, formerly known as the Project One, is one of the company’s most anticipated models. However, it appears the automaker doesn’t have plans for a high-performance follow up.
Speaking with Top Gear, Mercedes research and development boss Ola Källenius said “There are no plans [for an AMG Two] at the moment.” Källenius, who is set to replace Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche next year, went on to say “never say never, but for now there is no plan.”
That’s not too surprising as the One is still under development and the company is currently testing the model at a secret facility in England. Given the fact that the car hasn’t even been launched, its pretty obvious why Mercedes doesn’t want to talk about a successor quite yet.
While Källenius didn’t want to talk about a potential Mercedes-AMG Two, he did say a little bit about the upcoming One. Acknowledging the company is now into the “hardcore realization of the project,” the executive said building the car is a “very, very intense engineering effort” which wouldn’t be possible without passion of the people in Brixworth [at the Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertain center] and in Affalterbach.
Mercedes hasn’t released detailed specifications, but the Project One concept had a plug-in hybrid powertrain which consisted of a turbocharged 1.6-liter V6 engine and four electric motors. This gave the car a combined output in excess of 986 hp (735 kW / 1000 PS). In terms of performance, Mercedes said the model could rocket from 0-124 mph (0-200 km/h) in less than six seconds and hit a top speed in excess of 217 mph (350 km/h). The car was also be able to travel 15.5 miles (25 km) on electricity alone.
