PUNE: The Pune Rural Police has sent a proposal to the state home department to set up four new police stations at Patas, Morgaon, Neera and Uruli Kanchan in the district.

The move comes in view of growing number of incidents of ‘rasta rokos’ in these areas. According to police records, at least, 100 such cases are being registered annually.

“The proposal has been forwarded considering the need to effectively tackle the rising number of rasta rokos at these places. We are awaiting a response from the government,” superintendent of Pune Rural Police Sandeep Patil told TOI on Wednesday.

While Patas and Uruli Kanchan are in Daund taluka, Morgaon and Neera Narsinghpur are in Baramati and Indapur tehsils, respectively.

“We register close to 10,000 criminal cases annually. Out of which, over 5,000 cases are from Baramati, Danud and Indapur tehsils,” Patil added.

“The farmers have developed a tendency to protest on the highways. Since several police stations do not have adequate staff members, we have to provide additional force from the police headquarters. Therefore, at times, it becomes difficult for us to control the law and order situation in these areas,” said a senior police officer from Baramati division.

On Tuesday, Patil issued an internal order to all police stations chiefs directing them to register FIRs against those protesting on highways.

“To curb protest on roads, I have instructed in-charges of police stations to invoke legal action under the Code of Criminal Procedure Act (CrPC) henceforth,” Patil said.
