DCW notices over marshals in buses

After student complains of harassment

Taking suo motu cognisance of media reports about a student being harassed on a DTC bus, the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has issued notices to the Delhi police and the Transport Department seeking details on implementation of a decision to deploy marshals and home guards on buses.

The DCW has asked the Transport Commissioner to “provide a complete timeline by which marshals will be deployed in all buses at all times”.

“Please, also provide information on the reasons for the non-implementation of the decision till date,” the DCW said in its letter

“Several commuters have approached the commission in the recent past and have critical issues regarding bus transportation system of Delhi such as lack of adequate number of buses, especially during rush hours, and lack of adequate women-only buses on requisite routes,” noted the DCW.

The women’s commission has also sought details of steps taken by the department to install CCTV cameras in buses.

It has also sought the Delhi police’s response on steps taken to ensure safety of women and girls on DTC buses.

The authorities have till October 10 to file replies.
