Hendriks makes Australian Major League history at Yankee Stadium

Relief pitcher Liam Hendriks has become the first Australian to start in an MLB post-season game on baseball's biggest stage, Yankee Stadium.

The 29-year-old Perth native, one of only 33 Australians to play in the majors, opened the game for the Oakland A's against the New York Yankees in their must-win American League wildcard clash.

Hendriks, normally part of the A's bullpen, said he was honoured to be given the starting role after being sent down to the minor leagues before earning a recall to Oakland's 40-man squad in September and making 12 appearances.
