New Delhi, The Supreme Court on Thursday negated a petition seeking to rescind a Union of India decision to deport seven Rohingya men to neighbouring Myanmar, paving the way for their return later in the day.
Headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, the three judge-bench declined to interfere with the Central government’s order.
The apex court is also hearing a plea against a government order last year that states should identify and deport all Rohingyas, calling them illegal immigrants who pose a national security risk.
Prashant Bhushan, who filed the petition seeking a halt to the deportations, asserted that the seven men ‘may be tortured and even may be killed there. It is a clear case of human rights violation.’
South Block held that the deportations were ‘an administrative decision involving diplomatic and other factors including an overwhelming consideration of national interest.’
