Prithvi Shaw kicked-off his Test career with a bang when he scored maiden fifty off 56 balls during India’s first Test against West Indies at Rajkot on Thursday.
By doing so, he became India’s only teenage to score a half-century on Test debut. However, Shaw became the third Test debutant opener from Mumbai to score a fifty in his first innings. KC Ibrahim (1948-49) and Sunil Gavaskar (1970-71) were the others.
Overall, Shaw was the fifth youngest opener to score a half-century in his maiden Test innings after 17y Hanif Mohammad, Stollmeyer, Tamim Iqbal and Imran Farhat.
Shaw was hardly an hour into Test cricket and fans began to compare him with the likes of Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag.
Fans are reminded of Sehwag watching Shaw’s attacking batting, while his calculated cover drives and excellent footwork have made the Indian cricket enthusiasts nostalgic as those reminded them off Mumbai’s first Little Master, Sachin.
Meanwhile, Shaw who played only 14 First-Class matches prior to his Test debut, became the least experienced "batsman" to make Test debut for India since Sachin (9 FC matches).
At 18 years and 329 days, Shaw became the fourth youngest batsman to have the first ball of a Test and he also was the youngest Test debutant for India in a decade.
Shaw was also India’s second youngest Test debutant opener. He had a dream-come-true moment when he received his Test cap from none other than the Indian skipper, Kohli.
He scored a hundred in his Ranji Trophy and Duleep trophy debuts respectively and certainly the teenager will be keen to replicate that on the biggest platform of Test cricket as well.
