Barricades put up to stop members of the Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) at the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border were removed on Wednesday morning to let them enter the city and complete their march to Kisan Ghat, union leaders said.
“The government realised their mistake and decided to let our tractors in,” said BKU chief Naresh Tikait.
“The police were very helpful and facilitated our movement. Most of us have now started back for home,” he said.
‘Realised their mistake’
DCP (East) Pankaj Kumar confirmed that barricades were removed around 1 a.m. and the farmers were allowed into the city.
At the Delhi-UP border at Ghazipur where thousands of farmers had camped on Tuesday, a handful remained back to have breakfast and fix punctured tractor tyres before returning home.
In a tweet, Ghaziabad District Magistrate said, “After rounds of meetings, the Kisan Yatra agitation ended yesterday [Tuesday] night and all have started returning to their destinations. District traffic should normalise today.”
Union spokesperson Yudhvir Singh said, “The government has told us that our remaining demands require some financial deliberations for which they will need time, so we have decided to call off the rally and go home. And if they [government] fail to meet our demands, we will return.”
