Red alert changed to yellow in district

The district has taken all measures to face any emergency situation in view of a low pressure alert over the Arabian Sea, District Collector T.V. Anupama has said.

The red alert declared in the district following the forecast has been changed to yellow as there is no possibility of heavy rain. The yellow alert will continue from Friday to Monday in the district. There will be heavy rain on Sunday, according to the weather forecast.

“There is no need for the people to panic in the present condition. However, they should be on alert,” the Collector said.

In view of the warning for heavy rain from Sunday, a directive has been given to open shutters of the Poringalkuthu, Sholayar, Peechi, and Chimmini dams to control water level in the reservoirs. However, it will not affect the water level in the rivers much, the district administration said.

Control rooms have started functioning at district and taluk headquarters and fishermen asked to return from sea.

According to the statistics provided by the coastal police and the Fisheries Department, 450 fishermen were out at sea from the coastal areas of the district. Messages had been given to all of them.

Tahsildars have been asked to open relief camps, if necessary. The police and grama panchayats will make announcements in emergency situations.

Areas prone to landslips have been put on alert. People from these areas will be rehabilitated if necessary. Tourists will not be allowed to high ranges during night.

The shutters of dams will be opened during day time. Hospitals, PHCs, and CHCs will function round-the-clock. Preventive measures will be taken against epidemics.

The coastal police and the Marine Enforcement will open a control room in the district.
