CHENNAI: Dr A Jaganmohan of Mandaveli, popular for taking a fee of Rs20, and at times, treating those unable to pay for free, died on Wednesday. He was 77.

“He saw patients upto 1pm on Tuesday and fell ill in the evening. He was admitted to a nearby hospital and passed away today,” said a person at Chandra Clinic, owned by the doctor, on R K Mutt Road.

In 1999, the doctor used to get only Rs5 for consultation and if it was an injection, then he used to get Rs10 or Rs15 depending on the cost of the injection.

“Till 1990, he used to get Rs2 and it was only in 1999, he increased to Rs5 and the maximum he received was Rs20,” said the person.

“He was a doctor we would visit with just Rs10 in our pocket. If we said we don’t have money, he used to give us tablets and treat us free,” said M Kabali, an autodriver who stays near Mandaveli bus stand.

The doctor was a consultant for several companies and many employees used to come to him for getting medical certificates.

“Even for giving a medical certificate he used to charge Rs10 when the consultation fee was Rs5. He would never give too many tablets,” said M Sridhar, one of Jaganmohan’s patients.
