DMK president M.K. Stalin on Tuesday alleged that the State government was planning to disqualify Tiruvadanai MLA Karunas as a way to overcome the crisis likely to arise out of the court judgment on the disqualification of 18 AIADMK MLAs belonging to the T.T.V. Dhinakaran camp.
Mr. Karunas, who heads a small political outfit, was elected on an AIADMK ticket in 2016.
In a statement in Chennai, Mr. Stalin said there were reports that the ruling party was planning to serve a show-cause notice to Mr. Karunas in a bid to eventually disqualify him as a legislator.
“As the judgment on the disqualification of 18 MLAs is expected, the government plans to disqualify Karunas to survive the crisis and avoid a no-confidence motion. The move of Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami is highly condemnable,” he said.
He also accused the Governor of not intervening to rein in the government. “The indifference of the Tamil Nadu Governor gives room for suspicion that the Centre is treating the State with step-motherly attitude because it could not get votes from the State. How can the Centre remain a mute spectator when the State is witnessing an emergency-like situation,” he asked.
