Clean-up drives, exhibition mark Gandhi Jayanti

Various programmes were held in the city as part of Gandhi Jayanti celebrations on Tuesday.

District Collector K. Mohammed Y. Safirulla inaugurated the district-level celebrations at the civil station at Kakkanad. The week-long programmes are being organised jointly by the district administration, Department of Information and Public Relations, Haritha Keralam Mission, Kudumbashree and Suchitwa Mission.

Mr. Safirulla said that the 150th birth anniversary celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi have come at a time when the entire State has been together working hard to remove the waste that had piled up following the devastating floods. Cleanliness drive should be a part of our daily life, he said.

K.J. Maxi, MLA, inaugurated the programme organised jointly by the Public Relations Department, Central Field Publicity wing, and Cochin South Rotary. He said that Gandhi’s teachings were relevant, especially in the fight against communalism today. Gandhi’s teaching about the importance of unity was reinforced through the joint efforts made by thousands of people in overcoming the devastating floods, he said. Mr. Maxi said that several persons from various walks of life had united in rebuilding Kerala.

Many visited an exhibition chronicling Mahatma Gandhi’s life and freedom struggle held at Municipal zonal office, Thiruvankulam. A. Ramachandran, Vice Chancellor of Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies, delivered the keynote address.

Clean-up drives were also held under the banner of various government and educational institutions in the city.
