YSR Congress Party Singanamala Assembly constituency in-charge Jonnalagadda Padmavathy was injured in a freak mishap while being taken to the police station after being arrested, on Tuesday.

Ms. Padmavathy had challenged Government Whip and Singanamala MLA Yamini Bala to a public debate on the development in the constituency in the past four years and the latter responded by saying that it could be held at Narpala.

Sensing trouble, police prevented the MLA from proceeding to the village and arrested the YSRCP leader on her way to Narpala. When she was being taken in a police jeep, it hit a speed-breaker and the constable accompanying her nearly fell from it, but saved himself by latching on to the hand of Ms. Padmavathy.

“The constable caught hold of my hand and despite searing pain, I did not loosen the grip,” said Ms. Padmavathy. She suffered a fracture and was shifted a hospital here. She took objection to the police personnel delaying medical attention by two hours, while the constable was sent for first aid immediately.

Later, Deputy Superintendent of Police J. Venkatarao told Ms. Padmavathy that instigating people through social media handles and creating a law and order situation would be taken seriously and action initiated.

Referring to the challenge thrown by the YSRCP leader through various social media channels, the DSP said Ms. Padmavathy had to be arrested as she was proceeding to Narpala along with her followers.
