SURAT: City witnessed sudden bout of rain coupled with high intensity winds on Wednesday afternoon. Though it brought relief to people from scorching heat of 37 degree Celsius, the winds uprooted at least 25 trees and one chimney in various parts of the city.

City disaster officials said Central zone recorded 14mm, Athwa zone 16mm, Katargam zone 10mm, Limbayat zone 08mm and Varachha zone 01mm of rain.

Tree uprooting incidents were reported from near New Civil Hospital, old sub-jail, Majura fire station, Shankeshwar Complex on Kailashnagar Road, Nanpura, Chowk Bazaar and Bamroli Road. There were no casualties either due to rain or uprooting of trees. However, Surat, Navsari, Dang and Valsad districts in south Gujarat did not receive any rain until 9pm. Some parts of Dang and Valsad were lashed by rain on Tuesday though, which left a trail of damage and had uprooted several trees.

In Moti Kasbadi village of Valsad, a boy was killed and his mother injured when a house collapsed due to rain at 5pm on Tuesday. Suresh Bhoya, who was in his paddy field, rushed home but by then his three-year-old son Ayush had died. Bhoya’s wife Soniben had suffered injuries and was admitted to a local hospital. In Ahwa taluka of Dang, a tree got uprooted in rain and fell on the kuccha house of Arun Gangude at Devalpada Faliya causing injuries to four persons. Two injured persons of the four were treated at Valsad Civil Hospital. The rain, which was accompanied by high intensity winds, blew away a number of sheds from the government colony at Indira Nagar in Ahwa town.
