Tirupur: The parents of children in Vadachinnari Palayam panchayat union primary school near Kangeyam protested against the school education department for failing to provide adequate buildings on Wednesday.
The school functioning at Karappalayam was started in 1993, and though it was used to have significant students’ strength, it declined in the subsequent years. In 2013, only five students studied, but the number gradually increased due to efforts taken by a public forum formed to support the school. Since 2014-15, English medium classes are functioning. At present, 105 students are studying in the school.
Out of five, only three classrooms are functioning. The parents said, apart from renting a small room in the locality, the school authorities have erected a shed for conducting the classes.
“A villager has donated around two cents of land to school for development. Further, the school administration has requested the school education department multiple times to construct adequate buildings for students’ welfare,” S Suryaprakash, a villager said.
As no action was taken, the parents staged a protest and students boycotted the classes and stood in front of the school seeking district administration’s immediate intervention. The department and revenue officials promised to take action and pacified them.
“Kangeyam block development officer has promised to construct the buildings by seeking funds given under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) scheme soon,” a revenue official said.
