The Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan under the Ministry of Human Resources Development has approved a proposal to construct new buildings for the 45-year-old Kendriya Vidyalaya (KV), East Hill, in the city.
The approval came following a discussion M.K. Raghavan, MP, had with Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan Additional Commissioner (Administration and Vigilance) Saurabh Jain and other officials in New Delhi on Tuesday.
The Central Public Works Department has been issued a directive to prepare a detailed project report.
Mr. Raghavan said the existing old structures would be demolished and new buildings would be constructed on the campus. Classes would be held in two shifts for the time being.
The Additional Commissioner also approved the conduct of the first shift from 6.30 a.m. instead of 6 a.m.
The 45-year-old buildings of the school are in a dilapidated state. A student was injured when a concrete slab broke and fell on him. The school, which began functioning in 1965, has a strength of 3,100 students, said the MP.
Last week, District Collector U.V. Jose had asked Kendriya Vidyalaya not to hold classes in the old building on the campus. The decision was taken in accordance with the provisions of the Disaster Management Act.
