Vellore on Wednesday sentenced a 33-year-old man to 10 years rigorous imprisonment for raping and impregnating a woman with learning difficulties.
G Mohan, who was a daily wage earner hailing from Nal Kavaniyur village, raped the woman, who was 22 years old then, when she was returning home from a beedi manufacturing unit, where she was working, in February 2013. The woman also hailed from the same village.
When the relatives of the woman threatened to lodge a police complaint against him, the man promised to marry her and continued to have sexual relationship with her.
When the woman became six months pregnant, her relatives forced him to marry her. But Mohan was not ready. He threatened to kill her. Four months later, the woman gave birth to a stillborn baby.
The woman lodged a complaint against him with the Gudiyatham all-woman police. The police registered a case.
On Wednesday, magistrate M Selvam found Mohan guilty and sentenced him to
jail and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000.
