Staying private while using your favourite apps

Sailing through tough waters

Sailing through tough waters

With 50 million Facebook accounts exposed by a data breach, online privacy is back in focus. While tackling hackers is the job of internet companies, users can do plenty to stay clear of prying eyes while using their favourite apps and browsers.

Google’s Chrome is the most used browser in India as it’s the default gateway to the internet on Android, the underlying operating software in most smartphones in India, followed by China-made UC Browser, which a third of users have downloaded owing to its promise of faster browsing, followed by Firefox.

These browsers also keep a record of everything you have ever done, or will continue to do on the internet — the profiles you visit on Facebook or videos watched on YouTube. Mostly, this information is retained to speed-up load times. Here are some of the ways you can make it difficult for snoopers.

Use Incognito mode Chrome

Use Incognito mode Chrome

Click on the menu button on the top right corner of your browser window and click on New Incognito Window.

The incognito mode allows you to browse the internet and prevents the website from saving your history. Incognito disables the tracking information on your browser. It also doesn’t allow ad trackers to know what you were searching online thereby saving you from ads that follow you around online.

The browser asks for access to manage phone calls, location data and storage permission for a faster browsing experience. It’s preferable to not give access to all the information if you are concerned about privacy.

Use incognito mode by clicking on the icon once you open the browser.
