Staying private while using your favourite apps

Sailing through tough waters
Google’s Chrome is the most used browser in India as it’s the default gateway to the internet on Android, the underlying operating software in most smartphones in India, followed by China-made UC Browser, which a third of users have downloaded owing to its promise of faster browsing, followed by Firefox.
These browsers also keep a record of everything you have ever done, or will continue to do on the internet — the profiles you visit on Facebook or videos watched on YouTube. Mostly, this information is retained to speed-up load times. Here are some of the ways you can make it difficult for snoopers.

Use Incognito mode Chrome
The incognito mode allows you to browse the internet and prevents the website from saving your history. Incognito disables the tracking information on your browser. It also doesn’t allow ad trackers to know what you were searching online thereby saving you from ads that follow you around online.

To keep Firefox private
In addition, you can also switch on ‘Tracking Protection’ under the same menu to block online trackers that collect your browsing data across multiple devices.

How to make your favourite 'facebook' private
Restrict access to your posts — Go to Privacy Settings and Tools and restrict/change who can see your future posts to Friends
Go to Preferences > Apps, website and games, change settings to Turn Off to reduce the information you share with Facebook apps
Change who can view/search your profile using mail ID and phone number to Friends (so a stranger with your email and phone number can’t find you)
