Cape Town - Wiaan Mulder has been ruled out of the remainder of the One-Day International (ODI) series against Zimbabwe due to a left ankle injury.

Mulder sustained the injury at practice on Tuesday and has been withdrawn for further assessment.    

Proteas team manager, Dr Mohammed Moosajee explained the injury.

"Wiaan felt some pain and discomfort in his left ankle at practice and has been withdrawn from the remainder of the ODI series," Moosajee said.

"He will be assessed by an ankle and foot specialist in Johannesburg, who will be able to further assess the injury and give us a way forward in terms of the treatment and rehab strategy. The selectors will not name a replacement for the last ODI." 

The Proteas, meanwhile, won the toss and elected to bat in the second ODI at the Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein on Wednesday.

Dale Steyn makes a return to ODI cricket after two years - he replaces Kagiso Rabada who is rested - and Khaya Zondo comes into the side for the injured Mulder.
