Steyn to make Proteas ODI return in Bloem?

2018-10-03 08:46

Cape Town - The Proteas take on Zimbabwe in the 2nd of three One Day Internationals (ODI) in Bloemfontein on Wednesday, and the possibility of a Dale Steyn return is a major talking point heading into the fixture.

Steyn, who last played an ODI against Australia almost two years ago, was left out of the side that beat Zimbabwe by five-wickets in Sunday's opening ODI in Kimberley.

But, with the Proteas leadership acknowledging that player rotation would be a key factor of this series, Steyn could come into the mix when the sides are named.

Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi have formed a destructive new ball pairing for the hosts lately, and if Steyn is to return it would likely see one of those two rested.

It might make more sense to let Rabada, arguably South Africa's biggest weapon going into next year's World Cup, put his feet up.

Ngidi was named man-of-the-match in the 1st ODI with figures of 3/19, and the brains trust might want to let him keep going given that he has only played 9 ODIs to date.

The other two players who missed out in the 1st ODI that will be hoping to get a run in Bloemfontein are Khaya Zondo and Tabraiz Shamsi.

Play starts at 13:30
