Call for united fight against waste menace

The green protocol will be implemented in the State from November 1, Minister for Local Self-Governments A.C. Moideen has said.

He was speaking after inaugurating the Gandhi Jayanti Week celebrations, post-flood construction work, and an ecological conservation drive at Chalakudy on Tuesday.

“The green protocol will be implemented in offices as well as houses. The dumping of waste in public is one of the major issues faced by the State. The State witnessed the severity of the garbage menace during the floods. But people still dump waste on public places. Each individual and family should take a stand against this,” he said.

“We faced the floods together. We should fight united against the waste menace too. We should follow Gandhi’s style of action by uniting each and everyone for the common mission of waste management,” he said.

“Human beings can survive only by preserving environment and natural resources. The unity we showed during the floods should be continued even during the reconstruction,” he said. Education Minister C. Ravindranath presided.

“Priority should be given for reconstruction of the State. Understanding the extent of loss suffered by people is very important. People’s participation in reconstruction is also very important,” he said.

Maintaining the ecological balance was key to preventing natural disasters. Kerala should be a model in this, he said.

Addressing the function, Minister for Agriculture V.S. Sunil Kumar said the State was indebted to those who had donated land to the people who lost everything to the floods.

“We should remember the lessons taught by the floods. We should be able to set a model in post-flood reconstruction,” he said.

Books donated

The three Ministers and B.D. Devassy, MLA, donated their personal collection of books to the district library council.

People who led post-flood waste management was honoured at the function.

Various organisations and schools in the district conducted programmes, including cleaning drives, as part of Gandhi Jayanti.
