Drug and drink driver speeding with child on passenger's lap: Police
An unlicensed, drunk driver with ice in his system was caught speeding with a baby on his passenger's lap, police say.
The incident was one of a number of concerning road violations picked up by police in Canberra over the Labour Day long weekend.
Officer in charge of traffic operations, acting Station Sergeant David Wills, said while most motorists did the right thing, it was concerning some did not.
“Their actions were incredibly dangerous to themselves and the community," he said.
Police issued 144 infringements over the double demerit period for offences including speeding, overtaking a bicycle rider too closely, using a mobile phone while driving and not wearing a seatbelt.
On Sunday night, a 38-year-old unlicensed man was caught driving with a two month old on his passenger's lap at Boddington Crescent, Kambah, according to police.
Police allege he was travelling at 78km/h in a 60km/h zone, before he tested positive for alcohol, cannabis and the drug ice.
He will appear at the ACT Magistrates' Court at a later date.
On Monday night, police allege a drunk driver collided with a traffic light in Braddon, before narrowly missing the shop front of a nearby restaurant.
Police said he had already collided with two vehicles before hitting the traffic light.
He was breath tested, producing a reading almost four times the legal limit.
Meanwhile on Sunday night, a 30-year-old driver was caught speeding at 175km/h in a 90km/h zone on Caswell Drive.
Also on Sunday night, a 29-year-old man on a probationary licence was caught speeding at 152km/h in an 80km/h zone on Coulter Drive, Hawker, police said.
Both drivers were issued an infringement for $1841 and 12 demerit points.
