Yechury condemns RNI cancelling registration of CPI(M) mouthpiece in Tripura

CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury on Tuesday criticised Registrar of Newspapers for India (RNI) for cancelling registration of four-decade-old party's mouthpiece Desher Katha.

As per RNI’s letter to the publication, the registration has been cancelled on the basis of report from sub divisional magistrate, Sadar, West Tripura. The grounds for recommending cancelling registration is allegedly “unauthorised change of ownership.”

“This is highly commendable and autocratic decision of BJP-led Tripura government. This is suppression of democracy,” Mr Yechury told The Hindu.

The newspaper was served this notice by RNI on Monday. And for the first time in four decades, it did not publish on Tuesday.

The CPI(M) will be holding a protest against this decision.

The party has been consistently flagging the violence inflicted on its cadres allegedly by right wing activists in Tripura. In a recent Polit Bureau meeting held on September 26 too, the party had raised the issue.
