The Kochi City police on Monday arrested a 30-year-old man who attempted to set himself on fire in protest against the Supreme Court verdict on the entry of women to the Sabarimala Temple.

Sreeraj Kaimal, a native of Thayankari in Alappuzha and an active worker of a little known outfit called Hindu Samaj Sevak, was picked up from High Court Junction around 11 a.m. when he reached the spot with a can of kerosene.

A police team identified him and took him into custody. He had announced his plan to commit suicide in protest against the court order through a Facebook post. Following this, the police had been maintaining high alert in the area. A case has been registered against him on charge of attempt to suicide.
