Commemorating the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, famed micro-artist Mattewada Ajay Kumar has come up yet another tiny marvel — Dandi March in the eye of a needle.
He has sculpted eight people, including Mahatma Gandhi, leading one of the historic chapters of the Indian independence struggle in 1930. Mr Ajay Kumar’s creation features Gandhi with his signature walking stick and spectacles, measuring 1.09 mm hin height and 0.27 mm in width, followed by seven statues with a height of 0.76 mm to 0.58 mm and width varying between 0.18 mm and 0.21 mm.
Speaking to The Hindu, Mr Ajay Kumar said his father, Venkatachary, was also a freedom fighter and he has vivid memories of his father speaking about the freedom struggle era. “It took me 11 days and 30 hours to complete this piece of art,” he said, adding that this particular creation has been his toughest and most time-consuming so far.
A goldsmith by profession, Mr Ajay Kumar took to micro art three decades ago and was inspired by world famous artists Willard Wigan and Yury Deulin. He finds a mention in the Limca Book of Records for his creation of world’s smallest gold violin, lock and key, and scissors among others.
