Thiruvananthapuram: Two men, who stole doves that were meant for race competitions from a house at Karakkamandapam near Nemom, were arrested by Nemom police on Tuesday.
The police identified the accused as Raheesh Khan, 26, of Chanthavila near Kazhakkoottam and Shahrukh Khan, 20, of Maranalloor. Rahees Khan is a notorious criminal, involved in several burglary and vehicle lifting cases.

According to the police, the two accused stole 125 doves that were kept in cages on the terrace of complainant’s Najim’s house at Karakkamandapam. The house was still under construction and Najim and family lived in another house. This made things easy for the two accused. As per the complaint, the doves are worth Rs 1.5 lakh.

The alleged crime was committed nearly a month ago. The police zeroed in on the suspects by conducting inquiries at pet shops and aquariums across the district. A few of the doves were found in a pet shop at Beemapalli and the owner of the shop led the police to Rahees Khan.

“Khan was already in jail after being arrested by the Medical College Police a few days ago in connection with a motorcycle theft. We secured his custody and on interrogating, he revealed the role of Sharukh Khan in the crime,” said Nemom sub-inspector S S Saji.

The two men were produced before the court and were remanded in judicial custody. The remaining doves too were recovered from the residences of the accused. tnn
