The Madurai Institute of Social Sciences celebrated its 50th foundation day and inaugurated its golden jubilee celebrations on the institute premises on Tuesday.

Alumni of the institute, Madras High Court Judge T. Raja and Minister R.B. Udayakumar, participated in the event.

Speaking at the event Mr. Raja recollected his days as a student at the institute. He said the institute brought out the best out of the students and followed the Gandhian principle of ‘Education for life, Education through life, Education throughout life’.

Mr. Udayakumar said the institute was among the best in the country and said was blessed to be an alumnus of the institute. Every individual was unique and had to build an identity for themselves, he said and added that listening was the first quality of leadership.

In his presidential address, the Founder-Chairman of the institute Dr.D.V.P.Raja said that though Madurai was not the first choice to set up the institute, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise to be here in Madurai. He said as part of the golden jubilee celebrations, 25 centres of excellence would be set up near Alagarkoil.

Collector S. Natarajan, in his inaugural address, said that steps were already initiated to turn Madurai into a plastic-free city and augment water levels.

The Principal of the Institute D.Janet Vasantha Kumari welcomed the gathering and Secretary D.V.Dharmasingh proposed a vote of thanks.

Vice-Chairman D.V.P. Bamaraja and president Dr.L.H.Kitchley were present. The inaugural programme was followed by planting of saplings and cultural events.
