‘Parents will not approve of our love’

Afraid that they would be found by their families and forced to separate, a young couple that had eloped from Hyderabad last week attempted suicide by jumping off a temple building here on Tuesday.

Akshaya (18) escaped with minor injuries while Manish, 20, broke his back in the attempt.

Yadagirigutta police said the couple had left their homes on September 28. Missing complaints were filed by their families at Alwal police station.

From the CCTV footage here, it was found that Manish, an electrician, and Akshaya, an Intermediate student, had reached the temple town two days ago. They were last seen on the Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple premises around Tuesday noon, police said.

Around 7 p.m., knowing that parents and uncles of Akshaya, along with women constables, had come searching for them, the duo reached the top of Sri Chakra building complex and jumped from there. They were rushed to Area Hospital.

They told the press after first aid that their parents had disapproved of their relationship, and, fearing for their lives they had eloped. “They will not let us live together. They will kill us,” Akshaya and Manish said.
