Nine axes NRL Footy Show

The Nine Network has axed The NRL Footy Show just days after the league's grand final.

The decision comes after years of poor ratings and speculation the struggling program would soon get the chop. This year saw sports broadcaster Erin Molan take over from longtime host Paul Vautin, who had hosted the show for 23 years.

A Nine spokeswoman said the decision has no effect on sister program The AFL Footy Show.

"We are in ongoing discussions with [Eddie McGuire's] Jam TV about 2019," she said.

The NRL Footy Show has been on air since 1994 and has earned several Logie awards over the past two decades. However, this year - its 25th season - saw a number of setbacks alongside lacklustre ratings.

The debut episode for this year's NRL season's saw star Beau Ryan left with nowhere to sit. And just a few months ago, Molan was forced to apologise to former player Dave Taylor after viewers accused a segment of "fat-shaming him".
