NEW DELHI:
Congress has urged the
urban affairs ministry to grant it a few months’ time to vacate the party headquarters on
Akbar Road in
Lutyens’ Delhi as the construction work for its new headquarters is yet to be completed.
Sources said the grand old party wants to continue its operations from the 24 Akbar Road bungalow at least till mid-2019. The request would be placed before the
Cabinet Committee on Accommodation (CCA) early next month for consideration, they said.
TOI has learned though Congress had informed the ministry its new headquarters would be complete in November, it will need a few more months and the party does not want to shift base during polls.
Though
BJP has already shifted its headquarters to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg, it has not yet vacated 11 Ashok Road.
Sources said the CCA will also take call on the rental charges Congress needs to pay for its headquarters and other three government accommodations, which it occupies in the
Lutyens’ Bungalow Zone.
Congress is learned to have sought concessional rent for all the premises it’s occupying till its new office is ready. There is speculation the request may be allowed only for the AICC headquarters and for the other three properties it may be asked to pay normal rent or market rate.
