The labour unrest at the factory of India Yamaha at Oragadam near Chennai continued to intensify with the police arresting more than 500 workers when they staged a protest near the Kanchipuram bus terminus on Tuesday. The arrested workers were released in the evening.
The workers have been on strike for the past two weeks against the termination of two staff members in connection with the formation of a new union.
A member of the India Yamaha Employees’ Union, which is affiliated to CITU, said they were informed that a meeting will be held at a Labour Department’s Office on Wednesday to arrive at an amicable solution. The striking workers have been demanding reinstatement of two sacked employees.
The Yamaha factory at Oragadam has been producing two wheelers including scooters. The production has been hit for the past 12 days due to the ongoing strike.
