Mumbai: When a beauty salon owner left her brand new iPhone worth Rs 1 lakh in an Uber cab, she thought it was gone for good. Finding lost phones hasn't exactly been a priority for Mumbai police, particularly around Ganpati visarjan. But a policewoman from Santacruz managed to recover it.

Sana Shaikh, 22, boarded an Uber cab near a hotel on Juhu Tara Road on September 23. She wanted to travel to Linking Road, but midway during the ride, she had to alight and realised only later she had left her iPhone on the seat. "By the time I realised my folly, it was too late and the cab had left. I had no details about the cabbie or his vehicle registration number," said Shaikh

The next day, Shaikh approached Santacruz police station. A female sub-inspector inquired about the exact location Shaikh had alighted. "It was at Relief Road in Santacruz. There are two CCTVS mounted at the junction and we went through footage from both. The Uber had been captured on camera and its number plate was quite clear," said sub-inspector Anjana Alavne.

Alavne contacted the Uber office with the vehicle's number plate details and was given the name and contact number of the driver.

"The driver, Mohammad Adil, told us he had found Shaikh's iPhone and had kept it safely. Adil offered to come to the police station the next day to return the phone," said Alavne. Shaikh said she was surprised to hear from the cops within a day and get back her phone. "I was pleasantly surprised. The handset is special as I've never spent so much money on any electronic device."
