There are MTC-installed automatic bus wash plants in 34 depots at various pockets of the city.

An MTC official confirmed to DT Next that majority of the vehicles had never undergone water wash in the recent years. Sources said that around 20 such plants remain dysfunctional and no repair work was carried out to rectify the problem. 

An MTC source said, “The corporation struck a contract for maintenance with the manufacturers of the bus wash units. The private firm stopped carrying out maintenance after the corporation failed to pay them. Later, the work was assigned to the designated workers to clean the buses.”

However, a driver, on the condition of anonymity, said, “All the MTC bus drivers clean the front glass pane for good visibility. Besides, we doubt whether the body of the vehicle gets a wash or not. As a result, MTC buses have become dirty with the dust settling in everywhere, both inside and outside.”  

“About four years ago, the authorities had laid emphasis that all buses should get water-wash. But, there is no one to monitor now. The passengers are reluctant to sit on the shaky seats that have dust. Many wipe the dust off with old discarded papers,” said a conductor on anonymity.

Treasurer, K Natarajan, Labour Progressive Federation, cited lack of maintenance of washing plants as a reason for the current condition.  “No buses undergo water wash nowadays. Water-wash gains importance during the rainy season. The muddy water gets splashed on window panes and the chassis,” he said.  Such dirty buses have left a bitter taste among passengers.

When contacted, a senior MTC official said that a committee has been set up to resolve the crisis. “We are focusing on the issue. The officials are given instruction to check buses in regard with cleanliness,” the official said.
