Drunk driver injures two in road rash at Byculla

A 32-year-old driver of a high-end (MH.01.DB.8645) car was nabbed by the Byculla Police after a 4-km-long chase on Saturday night. The accused driver who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol collided into other parked vehicles at Byculla. His negligent driving left two people injured.

According to the Byculla police, the accused has been identified as Mohammed Alam who is a resident of Sewree and was working as a driver for the owner of the said car who left for Dubai two days before the accident. As per police reports, after receiving inputs about the rash driving, a team was sent to nab Alam who was driving the car in a crashed condition between Reay road and Kidwai road area. Alam who hit two people who were sitting on a parked vehicle near Lalbaugh sped off from the spot and following the mishap, the locals and other eye-witnesses chased him and other on the spot informed the Byculla police station who then sent a team to nab Alam.The chasing locals tried to warn Alam to stop the car and step aside but in vain. Later after about 4 km long chase, the police then successfully stopped the car at RAK Marg area in south-central Mumbai and immediately nabbed Alam who was not in a condition to even speak. The locals thrashed Alam before the police took him away. On searching the vehicle properly, the police found out a bottle of liquour from the front seat of the car.

"The accused was drunk and at that condition, he was driving the car with full speed neglecting the presence of other parked vehicles around the vicinity. Those injured Yunus and Javed sustained minor injuries. The owner of the luxury car is currently abroad and there is no role of him in the case since the keys of the car are always there with the accused. The accused has been booked under section 279 and 337 of the Indian Penal Code and other sections of the Motor Vehicles Act. Medical examination of the accused revealed that he was drunk and further investigation of the case is under progress." said senior police inspector of Byculla police station, Dinesh Kadam.

WHEREABOUTS

  • Police say, the accused has been identified as Mohammed Alam, a Sewree resident working as a driver for the owner of said car. Owner left for Dubai 2 days before the accident
