Is This B-Class Actually A Test Mule For Mercedes’ EQB Electric SUV?

With Mercedes’ EQC all-electric SUV already unveiled, the automaker turns its attention to the other eight EVs it has promised to bring to market by 2022.

Our spy photographers spotted one of them in Spain but it might not be what it looks like. The bodywork is clearly that of the upcoming B-Class minivan that will debut tomorrow at the Paris Auto Show.

However, some features like the wider wheel cases and higher ground clearance don’t belong on the B-Class. Furthermore, the 235/50 R19 wheel/tire combination is rather big for a compact MPV and would be better suited for an SUV.

Well, maybe that’s exactly what we’re looking at. This may be a chassis-testing mule for the new Mercedes EQB, which will share the platform with the upcoming EQA hatchback.

The vehicle produced no engine sound when the photographers spotted it, as it was running in electric mode. Furthermore, a look underneath the car revealed a fully covered underbody with no exhaust pipes in sight. However, an electric plug could be spotted in a cutout of the rear bumper.

Since the next-generation GLA and the GLB are in development and have already been spotted testing, the only guess that would make sense is the EQB. Why the 2019 B-Class body, then? We’re not sure, especially since Mercedes confirmed the new B-Class won’t offer an all-electric version anymore.

The EQB will share the EVA II platform with the EQA and is expected to offer a standard 60 kWh battery for a minimum driving range of 400 km (250 miles). The electric motors are likely to offer between 150 kW (201 hp) and 250 kW (335 hp) in the range-topping version, which might also get a 110 kWh battery.

Styling-wise, the EQB should combine a bodywork heavily inspired by the boxy GLB with typical Mercedes EQ design cues.
