Activists flay registration dept’s move to set up integrated complex at remote place

Tirupur: Consumer activists have opposed the registration department’s move to establish an integrated complex, to house district registration and sub-registration offices, in a far-off place from the current location in the city.
They alleged that the department was trying to be in favour of a real estate promoter, from whom it was said to have purchased land for the purpose.

While Tirupur district registrar and sub-registrar offices are functioning in a rented building near New Bus Stand, Anaipudur, Thottipalayam and Anupparpalayam sub-registrar offices are also functioning in rented buildings in respective places. Nallur sub-registrar office, which also comes under Tirupur taluk, functions from the building owned by the registration office.

The department is said to have purchased around 30 cents at Neruperichal, which forms the northeastern border of the Tirupur Corporation.

“While poramboke lands are available within city, the department has chosen land in far-off place, which is poorly connected by the public transport. We heard that the move was taken in favour of a real estate promoter, who owns more than 4 acres in the same place. The real estate promoter wanted to ‘increase’ the value of his land and utilized ‘services’ of the department,” said N Shanmughasundaram, joint secretary, Federation of Consumers’ Organization Society.

“How will they shift Anaipudur, Thottipalayam, Anupparpalayam and Nallur sub-registrar offices to Neruperichal, which is at least 24km away from the collectorate. There are more than 10 acres of land that remain unutilized on the collectorate premises. The people will be forced to travel unnecessarily to the faraway place if they wanted to register their lands or marriage or in connection with registering chit funds,” he said.

When contacted, a senior revenue department official told TOI: “Earlier, the registration department has sought lands, we also suggested few lands, but they declined the offers on few grounds including failing of soil tests. Now, they have informed us that they have purchased land in Neruperichal. In case of direct purchase, they don’t need to seek nod of the district administration.”

The district registrar was unavailable over phone when TOI tried to get his comments on the allegations.
