Despite assurances of elaborate security in place, several candidates have withdrawn from upcoming the urban local body elections in Kashmir as the fear of militant reprisal looms large.

BJP candidate Muzafar Ahmad Ganie, who had filed his nomination from two wards in Kurigam Qazigund, posted a video on social media announcing his withdrawal of nomination.

"I mistakenly filed nomination from two wards. I didn't know what I was doing. My mind wasn't working. I have withdrawn my nomination. I am resigning from politics. I am apologising to the people for my act. My mother is a heart patient and I have 10-year-old daughter. My family members have not eaten for days. I am again sorry and promise not to join politics," Ganai said in the video.

Another candidate, Sajad Ahmad Malik of Bidder Kokarnag, said, "I was not in my elements when I submitted my nomination. I apologise to the people of Kashmir for my acts. I swear by the Quran that I will not join politics. I reiterate that I will withdraw and not contest the polls," said Malik.

Even relatively peaceful Baramulla in north Kashmir has witnessed resignations. "I have committed a blunder by submitting my nomination. I am seeking apology for this act. I want to reiterate that I have no links with any party. I am resigning of my own free will without any fear or pressure," said Wasim Ahmad Bhat.

Three major parties — NC, PDP and CPM — have already announced their decision to boycott the polls. And with the terror threat looming large, several candidates have already won unopposed, the BJP ending up as the prime gainer.
