Rassie can equal Heyneke with All Black thumping

2018-10-01 12:34

Cape Town - They cannot win the tournament, but the Springboks are one massive performance away from equalling their best ever points haul in the Rugby Championship.

Since the competition was launched after the inclusion of Argentina in 2012, the best the Boks have fared is a runners-up finish in both 2013 and 2014.

In both of those years, they amassed 19 log points with four wins from six under coach Heyneke Meyer.

The 2015 edition of the tournament was shortened due to the Rugby World Cup, with the Boks finishing bottom of the log with three losses (from three matches).

Allister Coetzee, in his two years in charge, guided the Boks to two third-place finishes in 2015 and 2016, scoring 10 and 14 points, respectively.

On Saturday, the Boks host the All Blacks in Pretoria for their final match of the 2018 competition.

They are currently on 14 log points and will finish second regardless of what happens at Loftus, but a bonus point win would see them finish on 19 points.

Of course, coach Rassie Erasmus would take a win of any kind and beating the All Blacks twice in one tournament would be a first for the Boks since 2009.

Kick-off on Saturday is at 17:05.

Springbok Rugby Championship record since 2012:

2018 - 2nd (? points)

2017 - 3rd (14 points)

2016 - 3rd (10 points)

2015 - 4th (2 points)

2014 - 2nd (19 points)

2013 - 2nd (19 points)

2012 - 3rd (12 points)
