Video: Next Porsche 911 GT3 Caught Testing Non-Turbo Flat Six?

The 992 Porsche 911 GT3 may be set to retain its naturally aspirated flat-six engine. 

Porsche was at the Monza circuit in Italy recently testing out a variety of prototypes for its new road and race cars. Among these prototypes was one for the next-generation 911 GT3. The prototype, which only went out on track for five short laps, sounded a lot like the current 991-generation 911 GT3, which has a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six making 493 hp and 339 lb-ft of torque.

Previous rumors indicated that the GT3 would be turbocharged from the 992 generation 911 onward due to fuel economy and emissions regulations. This video, which comes courtesy of NM225 on YouTube, could be evidence those rumors were wrong (surprise!), as the prototype sounds nearly identical to the current GT3. The test car in question also had a large rear wing, dual-tip center exit exhausts, a vented hood and a large air intake worked into the front bumper.

The 992 Porsche 911 is expected to make its debut sometime next year as a 2020 model year vehicle. Leaked images have revealed the sports car’s new full-width rear light bar, along with its familiar side silhouette and redesigned interior. The standard 911 Carrera is expected to be powered by an updated version of the current Carrera’s 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged flat-six. A plug-in hybrid model is also expected, but Porsche has ruled out the possibility of a fully electric variant.
