LUCKNOW: If all hell broke loose early on Saturday morning for Vivek Tiwari’s wife Kalpana, the night was tumultuous for the young widow, who was fighting not just an outer battle with the system demanding justice for her husband, but an inner battle too, with thousands of unanswered questions running in her mind.
Taking unending questions from social workers, politicians and media persons, Kalpana spoke on various concerns.
On Sana Khan
Kalpana accused UP Police of trying to malign her dead husband's character, she said, “The police had tried to malign my dead husband’s character and that of a nice and innocent girl, whom I know. They had no right to do so, but it is my fundamental right to seek justice and ask questions to the government on what has been thrown at us.”

On seeking protection
With a calm exterior, and a demeanour that appeared more like the lull before a storm, Kalpana, said, “I want lifelong protection for my mother-in-law, my two daughters and myself from Prashant Chowdhary—who killed my husband—and his wife, who is sympathizing with a murderer. They can come back at us anytime for speaking up against this injustice. I am scared for my daughter’s safety. That cop is telling everyone that police can do anything!”
Rarely taking her gaze off the bedsheet, shattered yet strong, Kalpana added, “I was not able to think all of this yesterday as I was shell-shocked, but over night, the question of my daughters’ future and their security has been in my head continuously. PM Narendra Modi talks about beti bachao, beti padhao, aren’t we the country’s daughters?”
“I am struggling to deal with the fact that soon my daughters will have several questions about his absence and the killer cop now claims that the gunshot that killed my husband was a mistake. Should I also go and kill Prashant Chowdhary and tell his wife that it was a mistake?”
On her daughters’ future
Kalpana, who has a postgraduate degree in sociology, said, “I want a permanent job as my husband has gone but his responsibilities are mine now. I have mouths to feed, my daughters to educate and marry and give a quality of life to my old mother-in-law. Who will provide for them now? Should not the government think about all this, since it is government servants who killed my husband? Is this why we elected the government?”
When asked how she is handling her daughters and fighting the battle for justice, Kalpana said, “My elder daughter has had to miss her half-yearly examinations. My younger one, who is six-years-old, would keep asking for Vivek when he went on a daylong official trip to Delhi. Today when she sees me crying, she stares at me for a while and then is taken away by someone. What will I answer her in days to come?”
