NOIDA: Demonetised notes worth Rs 7 lakh were found dumped in a dustbin inside a cubicle of a women’s washroom in Mall of India on Wednesday, almost two years after the government banned the currencies.

A police officer told TOI that CCTV cameras had captured a woman carrying a cloth bag to the washroom and coming out empty-handed. The police are yet to identify the woman. Altogether 15 notes of 1,000-rupee denomination and 1,370 notes in old 500-rupee currency were recovered from the washroom, located in B zone of the ground floor. A cleaner, Sushila, found the notes lying in a dustbin inside washroom number 10 and informed the control room, which, in turn, alerted the security division of the mall. The Sector 20 police station was informed.

Manoj Pant, the SHO of Sector 20 police station, said four women can be seen entering the washroom minutes before Sushila. “Many women had entered and left the washroom. But just before Sushila enters it, at least four women can be seen going inside. Since there are no CCTV cameras inside the washroom, it is difficult to establish who left the notes inside the dustbin,” he said.

However, another police officer said on condition of anonymity that the cops have zeroed in on a particular woman seen carrying a cloth bag. “It is clear she dumped the bag into the dustbin,” the officer said.

The mall management has been asked to preserve the footage showing the woman with the cloth bag. Police said they had informed the Reserve Bank of India, which would look into the matter.

Contacted, a spokesperson for the DLF mall management said: “The management has responsibly handed over the money to police. The matter will now be investigated by them and we will cooperate as required.”
