Civic body to approach govt for funding of waste management initiative

The Kochi Corporation will go in for scientific capping of waste collected from flood-hit areas in the district. The waste picked up from nearby local bodies were brought to the campus of the municipal solid waste treatment plant at Brahmapuram, said Mayor Soumini Jain. Replying to a debate in the corporation council meeting on Saturday, Ms. Jain said the health standing committee would prepare the estimate for the job.

The civic body will approach the State government for funding the waste management programme.

The proposed waste-to-energy plant at Brahmapuram is yet to obtain statutory clearances, including environment clearance and NOC, from the Fire and Rescue Services Department, she said.

Health standing committee chairperson V.K. Mimimol said 2,618 loads of waste was brought to the plant site. The waste included beds and cloths which could catch fire any time, she said.

Ms. Jain said the civic body could make significant progress in the implementation of various projects.

Earlier, Congress councillor K.R. Premkumar shocked the ruling front by unleashing an attack on the civic administration led by Ms. Jain. “The civic administration has failed in all aspects of governance, and a change of guard was required for reinvigorating it,” he said.

Taking advantage of the disunity in the ruling front, LDF councillors criticised the civic administration for its various acts of commission and omission.

“The administration could not take forward the implementation of projects that were to be completed during 2018-19,” said V.P. Chandran, LDF councillor.

K.J. Antony, the leader of the CPI(M) in the council, demanded transparency in the implementation and management of projects like Roll-On Roll-Off vessel.
