A skimming device was found in an ATM near Saravanampatti on Saturday.
The police said that the equipment was found in the ATM of Canara Bank at Viswasapuram, near Saravanampatti.
The skimmer, which was fixed on the card slot of the teller machine, came off when a customer pulled it after he grew suspicious about it. He immediately alerted the bank authorities, who in turn informed the police.
The police retrieved a video footage which showed a man fixing the skimmer on the card slot of the teller machine two days ago. The police are yet to confirm the identity of the man.
According to the police, chances are scarce for the leakage of debit card details as the skimmer was traced before the person, who fixed it could take it for cloning cards.
Fraudsters generally clone the original debit cards by copying their details onto blank magnetic cards using a writer. They also fix a micro camera in the ATM kiosk to capture the pin number entered by the card holder.
The police said that they could not trace any external camera in the ATM kiosk in which the skimmer was found. The cyber cell of the City Police has registered a case and started investigation.
