KOLKATA: A 43-year-old Puja shopper died while on her way home after a cement slab of a foot overbridge fell on her at Baruipur station on Friday evening. Another woman was critically injured.

According to witnesses, Ashima Pramanik, a resident of Madarihat area of Baruipur, was with her daughter Mousumi when the incident took place. Just before crossing the tracks, Ashima stopped to buy some flowers while Mousumi went ahead by a few steps when the slab from the foot overbridge between Platform number 1and 2 fell on her from a height of 30 feet. She was rushed to a hospital where she was declared dead. The injured, Chhabi Naskar, too was going home after Puja shopping.

The victim’s daughter, Mousumi, said: “When the slab fell on her head, nobody came forward for help. I went to the GRP office, and the people there just handed me a slip after noting down our names.”

Railway sources said an inquiry by senior divisional safety officer, senior divisional engineer, senior divisional commercial manager and a assistant security commissioner will be conducted in five days. The concerned bridge inspector and inspector of works would be suspended. The Baruipur police have initiated a case.
