The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Friday issued notice to the Punjab DGP and other respondents in a case where a 35-year-old woman was allegedly driven around atop a police jeep in Majitha constituency of Amritsar recently.
Allowing the victim’s father-in-law’s plea, the court asked Punjab’s DGP to respond by November 2.
“We have approached the court seeking the setting up a Special Investigation Team headed by an IPS officer, to probe the entire episode, in which the woman was made to sit on the roof of the police jeep and driven around the village. Later, she was thrown off the moving jeep, resulting in multiple injuries,” said advocate Harchand Singh Batth, who was representing the petitioner.
Mr. Batth said that through the petition, they had also urged the court to issue directions for protection of life and liberty of the family.
The woman, identified as Jaswinder Kaur of Shehjaza village in Majitha (Amritsar), had alleged that police forcibly entered her house while conducting a raid.
She was then forced to sit on the roof of the jeep. She also sustained injuries after falling from the jeep.
