Downpours predicted for coastal areas, say officials

Meteorologists have predicted heavy rain in Kerala at least until the middle of next week, but say there is no concern from overflowing dams or rivers as in August.

“...South peninsular India is very likely to experience fairly widespread to widespread rainfall/thunderstorm activity with heavy rainfall at isolated places over parts of Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu during the next 2-3 days,” said the IMD daily forecast bulletin on Saturday.

However, officials downplayed concerns. “On an average, we expect 5-6 cm of rain until the October 3,” said IMD Director-General K.J. Ramesh.

No CWC warning

The Central Water Commission said on Saturday that while reservoirs in Kerala were full, no special warnings had been issued in the light of the forecast by the India Meteorological Department. “No special warnings have been issued. There is no flood forecast system in Kerala though there is a team sent to suggest improvements in dam management as well as flood warning,” said Masood Hussain, Chairman, CWC. “What we saw last month was a once-in-a-century phenomenon and we hope the State has put in place adequate measures.”

It’s largely the coastal parts of Kerala that will receive heavy rain in the coming days and the water will drain out into the sea, K.J. Ramesh, Director-General, IMD, said. “Rain will be less toward the interiors. Rain is typical to Kerala for this period, so not unusual,” he said
