KOLKATA: The
repair work on the Karunamoyee
Bridge post-midnight by
Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority has helped cops to ease out traffic movement from Friday morning. KMDA sources said a new bitumen layer was laid on the affected spot and a steel plate was used to cover the same to prevent it from getting eroded.
“We worked in the night so that traffic does not get disturbed. The spot where bitumen had worn-off was re-laid. Vehicles are now plying normally on the repaired portion of the bridge,” said an official from KMDA.
When TOI visited the spot, it found vehicles plying on all four lanes, unlike on Thursday, when there was a traffic pile up. “We had no trouble monitoring traffic from
Behala, Thakurpukur and Haridevpur this morning. For the repair work, we had restricted vehicles on to one single lane at night but had not stopped traffic for even a minute,” explained a sergeant at the spot.
The incident also triggered some panic initially on Thursday evening, given a similar incident got reported last Saturday. Though repaired for the second time, commuters now want an independent agency to inspect the bridge.
